LJMU in top ten universities funded by HEFCE. Liverpool John Moores University is one of the biggest winners in the first set of English funding allocations to be based on the results of the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF). The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) has awarded the University with £5.26m making it the 10th highest funded university. This funding increase follows LJMU’s success in the REF where the University achieved world-leading status in the latest assessment of university research, with the School of Sport and Exercise Sciences 0.01 marks off the top position in the UK and moving the University into the top half of the overall research league table. Other areas of particular excellence included Astrophysics for the impact of the National Schools’ Observatory on supporting the learning of UK school children, and English for the impact of writing in prisons and research into the history of everyday life.
