Development of a detailed procedure for the breeding of the mugilid thicklip grey mullet (chelon labrosus): a species with commercial perspectives and ecotoxicologically relevant

Culture of mullets (Chelon labrosus) Thanks to a national innovation project called “Optimization of maturation and spawning processes of the mugilid Chelon labrosus (Optimización del proceso de maduración y desovedel mugílido (Chelonlabrosus))” we succeeded in the induction of spawning in this mugilid species . Fry individuals reared in the facilities of each participant are still maintained for future works. These individuals will get the maturity stage next year.. Thicklip grey mullets We believe that this species could be appropriate to be produced by sustainable aquaculture, since it is omnivorous and it seems to be available in European seas. Furthermore, its resistance to polluted environments makes this species very suitable for environmental health assessment in European estuarine and littoral waters. Its adaptation to captivity conditions will allow its application as a model marine fish in research studies. We have created a union between education centres all around the world with the proper installations needed to test and close the reproductive cycle of this species. Our centre would coordinate the education centres and the logistics related to the species between the centres and the companies or research centres that can be located anywhere in Europe, guaranteeing the survival and well-being of the species. Five-ten centres own breeders and two year old fishes in fattening stage suitable to close the reproductive cycle in captivity. We think that a total work of two to three years will allow us to obtain optimal results.
